Orthodontic Emergency Care

Orthodontic emergencies can be unexpected, but knowing how to handle them can make all the difference. Here’s a clear guide on how to manage common orthodontic issues and when to seek professional help.

Types of Orthodontic Emergencies

Orthodontic emergencies generally fall into two categories:

1. Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances

Sometimes, braces or other orthodontic appliances may become damaged or cause discomfort. If you notice any of the following, follow these steps:

  • Irritating Tie Wire: Cover the wire with orthodontic wax or gently tuck it under the archwire using a pencil eraser or Q-tip.

  • Loose Band or Bracket: Leave it in place and contact our office during patient hours. We will advise if reattachment is necessary.

  • Broken or Poking Archwire: Try gently bending the wire with a pencil eraser or, if needed, carefully trimming it with clean nail clippers. Contact our office if discomfort persists.

2. Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth

If you experience a direct injury to the mouth or teeth, whether you are undergoing orthodontic treatment or not:

  • Apply ice to the injured area immediately to reduce swelling.

  • Contact your regular dentist for an examination. An X-ray may be necessary to determine the extent of the injury.

  • If a tooth has been displaced, knocked out, or fractured, contact your family dentist first. They have the tools to address the injury.

  • Once dental care is completed, contact our office to assess and adjust any affected orthodontic appliances.
