Retainers to Prevent Teeth Shifting

Removable Retainers

Once your orthodontic treatment is complete, you will receive retainers to keep your teeth in their corrected positions. This is crucial because the bone and soft tissues surrounding your teeth need time to stabilize. Without consistent retainer wear, teeth may shift, which could require re-treatment.

How to Wear Your Retainers

Teeth can shift throughout life, so wearing your retainers indefinitely is essential. Follow these guidelines:

  • Wear your retainers full-time for the first six months after braces or Invisalign are removed.

  • After six months, switch to nighttime wear unless instructed otherwise.

  • Dr. Catherine Miller will monitor your progress every four to six months for about a year and a half.

  • If wisdom teeth are developing, Dr. Miller may recommend an X-ray to check their progress.

  • Even after completing your orthodontic supervision, continue wearing your retainers nightly to maintain alignment.

Caring for Your Removable Retainers

Proper care ensures your retainers last:

  • Keep retainers away from heat sources (above 115°F) like heaters, car dashboards, or dishwashers.

  • Store them in their protective case when not in use.

  • Keep them out of reach of pets.

  • Clean retainers before and after each use using a soft toothbrush and mild soap. Occasionally, use a denture cleaner like Efferdent.

  • Retainers may need replacement over time. If they become loose, damaged, or worn out, contact our office.

Fixed Retainers (Bonded Wire)

Fixed retainers are designed to stay in place permanently unless your dentist advises removal. This wire should be monitored during your dental visits to ensure it is clean and secure.

Habits or Conditions That Require Stronger Retention

Some habits can cause teeth to shift more easily, such as:

  • Mouth breathing

  • Clenching or grinding teeth

  • Tongue thrusting or low tongue posture

  • Playing wind instruments

  • Lip sucking or biting

  • Pencil or pen chewing

  • Natural tooth spacing

  • Severely rotated teeth

Ongoing Dental Examinations and Cleanings

Continue practicing good oral hygiene, including thorough brushing and flossing. Visit your family dentist at least every six months for professional cleanings and exams.
